“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.“
This is the short description of a bestseller novel written by John Ronal Reuel Tolkien with the pen name J.R.R. Tolkien. He is best known for his famous fantasy novels like The Lord of The Rings, The Silmarillion and of course, The Hobbit.
The Hobbit was published on 21 September 1937 by George Allen and Unwin. It immediately became very famous and received wide critical acclaim. Tolkien has put in his vivid imagination and his stupendous writing skills, combined together in the form of this fantastical creation. He himself has put in illustrations in the book. There was a revised second edition printed in the year 1951 in which John made a slight change.
This novel is about a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. The fantasy novel deals with creatures like goblins, trolls, and dwarfs. Apart from Bilbo, his whole family is that of hobbits. There are wizards namely, Gandalf and Radagast. There are some scary scenes too that might frighten the reader.
Bilbo is a lazy hobbit, comfortably living in his hole. There is a dragon named Smaug who has with him the treasure he has stolen from his forefathers. Bilbo is tricked by Gandalf into stealing the treasure from Smaug. He makes him throw a party for the dwarves and shows him the path to a secret door on a map. Bilbo is stupefied and follows Gandalf without putting in a second thought. The Hobbit has to journey a long way and in his path, he encounters diverse creatures. There is one instance when Bilbo loses the trail and gets separated from Gandalf and dwarves. The plot is full of unexpected twists and interesting accounts.
The Hobbit is one full package containing mystery, adventure, magic, amazing story, battles and moral.
Like all other good books, this too has been adapted into movies but all the readers out there know that a book is always priceless and reading over watching the movie is always the priority.
The book is full of startling turns. It makes us search our inner self and find the hobbit within us. We realize that it is important to come out of our comfort zones and do things we think we cannot. It gives us a loud positive message like that of bravery and loyalty, along with a flawless story. The Hobbit can be read by children and adults both, and it is a recommendation to all those who have not read it, to make it a part of their book collection soon.
