The Wonderful Wizard of Oz typically known as The Wizard of Oz is a children’s book written by Lyman Frank Baum, an American author. Needless to say, this American classic is the best children’s novels to date. It was first published on 17 May 1900 by George M. Hill Company in Chicago, Illinois. The illustrator of the book, William Wallace Denslow has provided delightful cartoon images in the book which is a plus point as children love cartoons and it also helps them to envision what they read.
This novel is full of humor, adventure, magic and the most important of all good lessons and morals. It can be considered a must-read for young children as it brings out the message of loyalty, friendship, and kindness.
The book is about a young girl named Dorothy who used to live with her uncle and aunt and her pup Toto, in a cottage situated in the countryside. One fine day, there was a cyclone and Dorothy and Toto were unable to save themselves and flew away to a far off land where they embarked on a journey trying to find a way back to their house but instead encountering anomalous and inexplicable twists in their paths. She was gifted a pair of silver magical bellies by the good witch of North who tells Dorothy to first travel to the Emerald City. There she would find the great Wizard of Oz and only he could help Dorothy and Toto. On her way to the Emerald City, Dorothy meets many new people and also makes some new friends who travel along with her. Now the question is that, is she able to reach her destination and what all predicaments does she have to face?
In the year 1939, this book was adapted in the form of a movie. But the book is quite different from the movie and hence it is a must read. There are many who have either read the summary or watched the movie but actually reading the book is totally disparate as there is much more in those lines and there are a lot of surprises in store.
The characters Frank has used in his tale are such that any child would love. Along with the superb imagination, there is a lot that comes as learning while being lost in the magical world of Oz.
When this work of fiction was released in the year 1900, it immediately became the bestseller and still remains a hit among the kids. There have been many reprints and numerous editions of the book are available but it is a recommendation that the original one should not be missed.
